The simplest North Goa itinerary from Aldona is three day-loops: Day 1 heritage houses, the Parra coconut road and the Calangute–Baga coast; Day 2 Anjuna and a Chapora Fort sunset; Day 3 the far-north beaches of Arambol and Mandrem, or a slow village day. We are Ulhas and Anuja, and we have sent a lot of guests out on these loops. The trick in North Goa is not the list of places; it is the order. Group stops that sit near each other, avoid crossing the Calangute–Baga belt twice in a day, and be back in the quiet of Aldona before the evening traffic builds.

What is the best North Goa itinerary for 1, 2 or 3 days?

For 3 days, do one loop a day: heritage and the Calangute–Baga coast, then Anjuna and Chapora, then the far north or a slow day around Aldona. For 2 days, do the first two loops. For 1 day, follow the one-day version further down. Distances in this guide are road distances from our house in Corjuem, Aldona.

Day 1: Heritage houses, the coconut road and the Calangute–Baga coast

Day 1 takes you from the inland heritage belt to the busiest beaches, in that order, so the crowds come at the end of the day. Start at the Houses of Goa Museum (14.3 km), a ship-shaped building by Gerard da Cunha that tells the story of Indo-Portuguese homes through models, sketches and artefacts. It is closed on Mondays, so do not start this loop on a Monday.

Drive on to the Parra coconut tree road (14.5 km) for the photos, then to Mãe de Deus Church in Saligao (15.4 km), a neo-Gothic church built between 1867 and 1873. Spend the afternoon at Calangute (18.4 km) and Baga (17.6 km) for water sports and a shack lunch. If you want the nightlife of Tito’s Lane, go; if not, leave before sunset and you will miss the worst of the traffic home.

Day 2: Anjuna, Vagator and a Chapora Fort sunset

Day 2 is the Anjuna–Vagator side of the coast, timed to end on the walls of Chapora Fort at sunset. If you are here between November and April, do this loop on a Wednesday: that is the only day the Anjuna Flea Market (18.1 km) runs, from mid-morning until around sunset, with handicrafts, clothes and food stalls.

After lunch on Anjuna or Vagator beach, walk up to Chapora Fort (18.6 km). The Portuguese rebuilt it in 1617 on an older site, and it is the fort from “Dil Chahta Hai”. There is no entry fee; the climb is short but steep and uneven, so wear proper shoes and aim to be up there between about 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Day 3: Arambol and Mandrem, or a slow day around Aldona

Day 3 has two options: the far-north beaches, or a slow day close to home. Arambol and Mandrem (29 km) are calmer than the Calangute belt, with long sands, yoga cafés and good sunsets; it is the longest drive of the three days, so leave after breakfast. At Arambol, walk north along the beach to the Paliem Sweet Water Lake, and stay for the sunset drum circle that gathers on the sand in season.

If you would rather rest, stay local. Corjuem Fort, built in 1705, is 5 minutes from our gate (restoration work has been going on, so check it is open), and the Aldona–Corjuem cable-stayed bridge is right next to it. Mayem Lake, with GTDC paddle boats, is about 15 minutes away, and on a Friday the Mapusa market, about 18 minutes away, is worth a morning. Our Aldona travel guide covers these in detail.

What if I only have one day in North Goa?

With one day, combine the best of Day 1 and Day 2: Parra coconut road and Saligao church in the morning, a Calangute or Baga beach lunch, and Chapora Fort for sunset. That is roughly 50 km of driving in total from Aldona, and it keeps the hops between stops short.

How do I get around North Goa from Aldona?

A taxi or a rented scooter is the practical way to do these loops. Book cabs on the GoaMiles app or the government Goa Taxi App, or hire a local taxi for the full day. If you rent a two-wheeler, take one with yellow/black commercial number plates only; a helmet and a driving licence are compulsory. Beaches are about 35–40 minutes from us by road, so plan one loop per day rather than several short trips.

When is the best time to follow this itinerary?

November to February is peak season, when every stop on this list is open and the beach shacks are running; Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks. October and March are quieter shoulder months. In the monsoon, June to September, the sea is rough and many shacks close, so swap beach time for the forts, the Houses of Goa Museum and the green inland villages around Aldona.

Is the WiFi fast enough for video calls and remote work?

Yes. We have a 300 Mbps fibre connection on WiFi 6, with a 4G backup for the times the fibre line drops. That is plenty for video calls, with more than one person online at the same time.

What you see on your own laptop will depend on your device and which room you are in. If a specific upload speed matters for your work, ask us on WhatsApp before you book and we will check it for you.

Where will I actually sit and work?

At your own desk: every room has a dedicated workstation and individual AC, so you can shut the door and work in a cool room. The house has RFID keyless locks.

When you need a change of scene, there is the shared living area, a shared balcony and a personal library. In the evenings there is carrom and other indoor games. RO drinking water is on hand, and 600 litres of solar-heated water a day means a hot shower after a long day of calls.

What happens if the power goes out?

The house has UPS power backup and a hybrid solar system that generates over 10,000 kWh a year, and the internet has its 4G backup.

Which room is best for a remote worker?

Is a monsoon workation in Goa a good idea?

For work, yes. June to September is Goa’s monsoon: green, quiet and lower priced, which is what you want when most of your day is spent at a desk.

Peak season is November to February, busiest over Christmas and New Year, and October and March are the shoulder months. If you are here on 24 June, you will see Aldona celebrate São João with the traditional jump into wells.

What about food, groceries and laundry on a long stay?

Our family cooks home-style Goan meals: breakfast from ₹100 per person, and vegetarian or non-vegetarian lunch and dinner on request (ask for the current menu). Beef and pork are not allowed on the premises.

What can I do on weekends from Aldona?

Most of North Goa is within 40 minutes. Closest to us are Corjuem Fort (5 minutes; restoration work has been going on, so check it is open), the Aldona–Corjuem bridge, and Mayem Lake (about 15 minutes), where GTDC runs paddle boats.

  • Friday: Mapusa market, about 18 minutes away, from about 8 am until early evening.
  • Half day: Panaji (about 25 minutes) or Old Goa’s Bom Jesus (about 40 minutes).
  • Beach day: Calangute and Baga (about 35 minutes), Anjuna and Vagator (35–40 minutes).
  • Full day: Dudhsagar Falls, about 1 hour 50 minutes by road.

Who is a workation here not right for?

If you want to close your laptop and walk to a beach café, this is not your place. The nearest beaches are about 35 minutes by road, and Aldona is a village, not a nightlife area.

It also doesn’t suit party groups: we have a no-parties rule, alcohol in moderation, and no smoking indoors (terrace only). You will want a cab, a scooter or your own car. How far is Thivim railway station from Aldona?

Thivim railway station is 8–10 km from our house in Corjuem, Aldona, about 20 minutes by road in normal traffic. Of Goa’s main railway stations, it is by far the closest to us.

Karmali station is 27–29 km away (about 40 minutes) and Madgaon is 47–52 km (about 1 hour 15 minutes). If your train stops at Thivim, get off there rather than riding on to Karmali or Madgaon. It saves you 20 minutes to nearly an hour on the road.

How do I get from Thivim station to the homestay?

The easiest way is a pickup that we arrange: WhatsApp us your train and expected arrival time, and we will confirm the rate before you travel. You can also book a cab yourself on the GoaMiles app or the government Goa Taxi App.

When is the Mapusa Friday market, and is it worth the trip?

Yes, if your stay includes a Friday. Mapusa’s market is a weekly Friday bazaar that runs from about 8 am until early evening, and it is about 18 minutes from our door.

Should I stay in Mapusa town or in Aldona?

Stay in Mapusa if you need to walk to the bus stand and market every day. Stay in Aldona if you want a quiet village base and don’t mind an 18-minute drive into Mapusa when you need it.

Aldona is a village of about 6,300 people (2011 census) in Bardez taluka, on the Mapusa river, a tributary of the Mandovi. Think paddy fields, coconut groves and Portuguese-era houses. St Thomas Church, built in 1596, stands on a plateau above the river. Corjuem Fort, built in 1705 and one of only two inland forts left in Goa, is 1.2 km from us; restoration work has been going on, so check it is open before you visit.

Traffic and time. Staying inland means each beach day starts with a drive: from us, about 35 minutes to Calangute or Baga and 35–40 minutes to Anjuna or Vagator. In return, Thivim station is about 20 minutes away and Mopa airport about 40.

What should you check before booking a homestay in North Goa?

How do I reach Aldona from the airport or railway station?

The quickest routes are from Mopa airport (GOX), about 40 minutes by road, and Thivim railway station, about 20 minutes. Times are from our homestay in normal traffic; distances are ±2 km.

By bus. KTCL buses run between Mapusa and Aldona/Corjuem (for example route 116), roughly 8 am to 7:30 pm, for about ₹15–21. They are regular, but timings vary.

Getting around. Use taxis, or rent a two-wheeler only if it has a yellow/black commercial number plate; a helmet and licence are compulsory. We have free secure parking and an EV charging station.

What are the best things to do in Aldona?

The best things to do in Aldona are Corjuem Fort, the Aldona–Corjuem bridge, St Thomas Church and the village lanes. Mayem Lake and Mapusa’s Friday market are each under 20 minutes away.

Corjuem Fort

Corjuem Fort (Fort Assunção) was built by the Portuguese in 1705, under Viceroy Caetano de Melo e Castro, against the Marathas. Aldona–Corjuem cable-stayed bridge

The roughly 235-metre bridge opened in 2004 and replaced the old ferry. It is under 1 km from us.

St Thomas Church

Mayem Lake and Mapusa Friday market

Mayem Lake, a GTDC-run lake in Bicholim with paddle boats, is about 15 minutes away over the Corjuem–Poira bridge. Mapusa’s weekly Friday market runs from about 8 am until early evening, about 18 minutes by road.

Beaches

Which festivals are celebrated in Aldona?

Aldona’s village festivals are the Feast of St Thomas in April, São João on 24 June and the Choranchem Fest on 29 October, plus Shigmo in February–March.

  • Feast of St Thomas (April): on a Saturday a few weeks after Easter, so the date changes yearly. Ask us for this year’s date.
  • São João (24 June): celebrated with the traditional jump into wells.
  • Choranchem Fest, the “Robbers’ Feast” (29 October): remembers an attempted robbery of the church in 1895.
