North Goa has a beach for every kind of trip, but they are very different from one another. The far north, from Querim to Ashwem, is calm and laid back. The middle stretch, Vagator and Anjuna, has cliffs, cafés and the famous Wednesday flea market. Baga and Calangute are the busy, lively heart of Goa’s beach life, and Candolim and Sinquerim are a little quieter, under Fort Aguada.

We host guests in Aldona, a village about 18 km inland, roughly the same drive to most of these beaches. Distances below are by road from Aldona where we have measured them.

The beaches, from north to south

1. Querim (Keri) Beach

Goa’s northernmost beach, near the Tiracol fort and the Maharashtra border. Long, quiet and lined with casuarina trees. Few shacks, few people.

2. Arambol Beach (29 km)

The free-spirited beach: sunset drum circles, yoga and music cafés, paragliding from the cliffs, and a freshwater lake a short walk north along the beach.

3. Mandrem Beach (29 km)

Wide, clean and calm, with a small river lagoon and quiet beach huts. One of the most relaxing beaches in Goa.

4. Ashwem Beach

Soft sand, gentle water and stylish beach restaurants. Good for a slow beach day with children or as a couple.

5. Morjim Beach

Known as a nesting beach for Olive Ridley sea turtles, which are protected here, so parts of the beach are kept quiet. Also popular with kite surfers and visitors from Russia.

6. Vagator Beach (18.6 km)

Red cliffs and dramatic views, with Chapora Fort above it. Walk up the fort for sunset, the view made famous by the film Dil Chahta Hai.

7. Anjuna Beach (about 18 km)

Rocky in places, with cafés along the cliffs. Come on a Wednesday between November and April for the Anjuna Flea Market (18.1 km from Aldona).

8. Baga Beach (17.6 km)

Busy, lively and full of shacks, water sports and nightlife. Tito’s Lane, behind the beach, is Goa’s best-known party street.

9. Calangute Beach (18.4 km)

The biggest and busiest beach in North Goa, sometimes called the queen of beaches: water sports, shacks and crowds all day. The closest beach for most of North Goa.

10. Candolim Beach

A long, quieter stretch south of Calangute, with good restaurants and fewer hawkers. A comfortable choice for families.

11. Sinquerim Beach (about 24 km)

At the southern end of the North Goa coast, below Fort Aguada and its lighthouse (24.3 km from Aldona). Popular for water sports and dolphin trips.
