What is Central Goa?
Central Goa is not a district; it is the name travellers use for the belt between the northern beaches and the south. Panaji, Old Goa and Chorão are in Tiswadi taluka, in North Goa district, and Ponda lies further inland to the south-east.

Places to visit in Panjim in half a day
Fontainhas, the Maruti Temple on Altinho, the Parshuram statue on the Yog Setu promenade, and an evening on the Mandovi.
Fontainhas Latin Quarter
Narrow lanes of pastel Portuguese-era houses and small cafés, best explored on foot in the morning or late afternoon. The Maruti Temple is on the hill just above.
Maruti Temple, Altinho
A Hanuman temple on Altinho hill overlooking Fontainhas, reached by steps or by road. Its tower is lit at night. It is also on our Hindu temples of Goa guide.
Bhagwan Parshuram statue and Yog Setu
A 20-foot statue of Parshuram, who in Hindu legend created the Konkan coast, stands on a point jutting into the river at the Yog Setu promenade. It was unveiled on 21 June 2023.
Mandovi river cruise from Santa Monica jetty

The viewpoint and beach of Central Goa
Dona Paula, where the Mandovi and Zuari rivers meet the Arabian Sea, is the classic sunset viewpoint.

What should you see in Old Goa?
The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral, a few minutes’ walk apart, about 28 km and 40 minutes from Aldona. Both are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Churches and Convents of Goa”, listed in 1986.
Basilica of Bom Jesus
Begun in 1594 and consecrated in 1605, the basilica holds the body of St Francis Xavier.
Sé Cathedral
Begun in 1562, completed in 1619 and consecrated in 1640, Sé Cathedral is one of the largest churches in Asia. Its Golden Bell is said to be the largest in Goa. The other Old Goa churches are on our Christian heritage trail.
How do you visit the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorão?
The Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a mangrove bird sanctuary on Chorão island, about 17 km from us by road; check the route on Google Maps before you set off. Its gate is at the Chorão landing of the Ribandar–Chorão ferry. Walk the paved path through the mangroves, go early in the morning, and check timings and access at the entrance.
Is the Ponda spice farm worth the drive?
Yes, as a half-day. Sahakari Spice Farm at Curti, Ponda, 40 km from us, runs a guided spice-plantation walk followed by a Goan buffet lunch. Combine it with the Ponda temple circuit.
How do you plan a one-day Central Goa trip from Aldona?
- The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorão, early in the morning.
- Old Goa: Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral.
- Panjim: Fontainhas, the Maruti Temple and the Parshuram statue.
- Miramar Beach.
- Dona Paula for sunset, or the one-hour sunset cruise (both are at sunset, so pick one).
