Short answer: the best time to visit Goa is November to February, when it is dry, sunny and pleasant, the beach shacks are open and the sea is safe for swimming. October and March are the smart in-between months: good weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. June to September is the monsoon: heavy rain, rough seas and closed beach shacks, but also the greenest, quietest and cheapest Goa of the year.
We host guests in Aldona, a village in North Goa about 18 km inland from Calangute and Baga, all year round. This guide is what we tell guests who ask us when to come.
Goa at a glance: season by season
| Months | Weather | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| November to February | Dry, sunny, cooler evenings | Beaches, water sports, markets, nightlife, festivals | Highest prices and crowds, especially Christmas to New Year |
| March to May | Hot and humid | Lower prices, quieter beaches, mangoes and cashew season | Midday heat; plan the beach for mornings and evenings |
| June to September | Monsoon: heavy rain, green everywhere | Waterfalls, villages, food, quiet workations, the lowest prices | Rough sea, no swimming, most beach shacks and water sports closed |
| October | Rain easing, warm | Green landscapes with drier days, pre-season prices | Some shacks still setting up early in the month |
Month by month
November
The season opens. The weather settles, shacks are back on the beaches and the crowds have not peaked yet. Panjim hosts the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) every November. One of the best months overall.
December
Peak season. Christmas and New Year are Goa’s busiest and most expensive weeks, with church celebrations, midnight masses, beach parties and large music festivals. On 3 December, the Feast of St Francis Xavier draws pilgrims to Old Goa. Book rooms and car rentals early.
January
After the New Year rush, January is often the sweet spot: perfect weather, a little less crowded, and prices slowly coming down after the first week.
February
Still dry and pleasant. Goa Carnival, with parades and floats in the main towns, usually falls in February or early March (the dates move each year with Lent).
March
Warmer, quieter and good value. Shigmo, the spring festival with colourful parades, takes place in March.
April and May
Hot and humid. Beaches are quieter and rooms cheaper. It is mango and cashew season, so the markets are at their best. Shacks start closing towards the end of May ahead of the monsoon.
June to September: the monsoon
The rains arrive in early June. The sea becomes rough, swimming is unsafe and beach shacks and most water sports close until the season returns. In exchange, Goa turns completely green: rice fields, waterfalls, rivers and villages are at their most beautiful, and rooms are at their cheapest. Monsoon festivals such as São João (24 June) are celebrated in North Goa villages, and Ganesh Chaturthi falls in August or September.
If you come in the monsoon, stay somewhere with reliable power backup and plan indoor and village days rather than beach days.
October
The rain eases off and Goa is still green. Shacks and water sports restart through the month. A good choice if you want monsoon landscapes with mostly dry days.
